Andrew’s Wintry Catch

Its been a lean few weeks for our fishermen, but today Andrew Stevens, our lobster fisherman, braved the freezing temperatures and hit the jackpot with his solid silver bars of stunning Newlyn Bass…

And they’re in their way up the A303 as I write this. Andrew’s catch is always sought after and now that the lobster season is drawing to an end, he turns his talents to hunting for other species. The Bass were jumping this afternoon and we’ve got some real beauties heading our way. As well as the Bass, we’ll have plenty of variety tomorrow and at this time of year, the quality of the Cornish catch is as good as it gets

If you love your shellfish, we’ve  been getting  lots of fabulous feedback on our extra large Shetland scallops which will be available all weekend. They’re pretty big, and a real treat, so quick and simple to cook and utterly delicious. Or, our plump Porthilly Mussels are also in peak season, so if you fancy a treat, they’re ultra quick and super tasty, just follow our fab classic moulles recipe and you won’t be disappointed

A Bank Holiday weekend AND glorious sunshine predicted, what more could we ask for

However you plan to enjoy your weekend #TeamFish will be working their wellies off making sure everything is ready for a busy few days. We’ll have a brilliant range of super-tasty ready made kebabs, our famous and highly addictive potato salad, platters, lobsters and lots of other scrumptious treats to help you celebrate the sunshine

Andrew’s Newlyn lobsters will be going through the pot, so we’ll have lots of cooked and dressed available, as well as our ‘garlicky’ half lobsters – perfect to pop on the grill. Or if you prefer prawns, our whopper #Badboy Tigers can also be garlicked up, ready to throw on the barbecue

Please give us a call on 01276 66618 if you know exactly what you’d like and we’ll make sure we put your order in a safe place for you to collect at your leisure. Otherwise pop down in your shorts and flip flops and see what takes your fancy

Celebrating the start of the Cornish Lobster Season

On Saturday 28th April, Andrew our intrepid lobster fisherman, will be joining us at the shop to celebrate a rather early start to the Cornish Lobster Season

We’ll be celebrating the day with lots of freshly cooked and live Native lobsters, as well as a fabulous selection of superb fish and shellfish

 

With our ‘early season’ Newlyn lobsters starting from around £14 each, they’re sure to be popular, so make sure you get your orders in – it’s still very early in the season, so we definitely recommend you pre-book to make sure you don’t miss out

And just to add a little extra excitement, the BBC will be visiting us on Saturday morning to film Andrew’s visit and see how both Andrew and our customers benefit from, and enjoy, our ‘special relationship’ – we hope you can find time to pop along and show him your support

So many of you have enjoyed our #AjaxHake over the last 3 years and we’re absolutely delighted that Alan and the crew of the Ajax have been nominated for 2 industry awards (we did nominate them, along with many others in the fish industry)

The category that you can cast your vote in is ‘Demersal Fisherman of the Year’. The ‘Sustainability Award’ for the excellent work that Alan was heavily involved in to get the Cornish Hake through MSC certification is not open for public vote but will be decided by experts within the industry

We’re working hard to reduce our packaging output and you can really help…

Help  us to achieve our #TeamFish Goal for 2018

#ReduceReuseRecycle

So many of us watched David Attenborough’s Blue Planet and, like the majority of our customers, #TeamFish were horrified by the shocking images of plastic pollution. So, after thinking long and hard about what more we could do, we started 2018 with our New Year Resolution to ‘significantly reduce our packaging output’

We’ve come a long way in a short space of time, but there’s still so much that can be done and with your help we can definitely do so much more.

A few things we’ve done so far…

❤️ Given out over 3000 free reusable coolbags – with more on the way
❤️ Replaced our plastic carriers and HDPE fish bags with paper alternatives
❤️ Replaced our polystyrene trays with fully recyclable / made from recycled alternatives
❤️ Introduced compostable / fully recyclable paper packaging for some of our products
❤️ Replaced single use spoons and forks with wooden alternatives
❤️ Over 500 customers Christmas Orders were packed in cardboard boxes instead of plastic carriers
❤️ Since we opened we’ve always separated our organic, recycling and non-recyclable waste. And the vast majority of our non-recyclable waste is used to produce electric energy
❤️ Encouraged our customers to bring in their own re-usable dishes to totally eradicate the need for any packaging at all ????

What you could do to help…

❤️ Remember to bring in your coolbags or, if you don’t have one yet, a reusable carrier bag
❤️ Consider bringing in your own dishes to take your fish home in
❤️ Rinse out all of our plastic packaging and make sure it goes into your recycling bin
❤️ Let us know of any packaging ideas or plastic-free initiatives you’ve seen elsewhere – we’re open to all suggestions
❤️ Spread the word ????

There is still a long, long way to go, and at the moment we are working with what we believe are the ‘least worst’ packaging options available. But, as things change and better food packaging solutions come onto the market we can move very quickly to become even less reliant on plastic

Happy New Year to you all

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New year and that 2018 brings you love and happiness

We’ll be back to normal later this week, opening on Thursday 4th January at 7:30am. Although fishing has resumed, it is being hampered dramatically by Storm Eleanor which is hitting our coastal towns hard over the next few days. There will be lots of beautiful fresh fish available, but the selection may be a little limited as we navigate through the first few days of the New Year

#TeamFish are all excited and motivated for 2018, as we’re all becoming exclusively Pescatarian for the month of January (vegetarian was a step too far for us carnivores). We’ll be posting our recipes and pictures throughout the month and are looking forward to sharing our meal ideas with you all. For those of you who use Social Media you also can find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

We’re very much looking forward to getting back to work, and hope to see you all soon

Calling last orders – Saturday 16th December

With just a few sleeps left, tomorrow (Saturday 16th) is the last day to place your orders for Christmas and New Year

 

If you need a little help or inspiration our Christmas Leaflet has some lovely ideas showcasing  some of our most popular products. Or if you’re not sure what you fancy, give us a call or pop in and we’ll be happy to take you through some options

Fish will be very short as we head towards the weekend, so we do advise you to consider getting ahead of the game and buying your fish a little early. Fresh fish freezes really well, and as it’s only for a couple of days, you won’t even notice it’s been frozen. We can even vacuum pack it for you to keep the quality at its absolute best.

And finally, don’t forget, we close on the 24th until 29th and 30th for New Year and then we’re closed again until Thursday 4th January.

Availability on our final Fish Preparation workshop…

** Friday 10th November – now fully booked**

Our hugely popular fish workshops have been running every month for the last 3 years, but as we are now so busy in the shop, we had to make the difficult decision to stop delivering them

We have been persuaded to a final date, and have availability on Friday 10th November. The cost is £60.00 per person, and you will learn to fillet 4-5 different types of fish – and get to take everything you prepare home to enjoy over the weekend. We talk you through recipe ideas and help you broaden your repertoire by introducing you to some of the fish you may not have tasted before

The evening starts at 6:30pm and finishes at between 9-9:30pm. Places can be booked by calling us on 01276 66618
