A staple of Japanese cuisine, Unagi Kabayaki is freshwater eel that has been filleted, grilled and glazed in a rich sweet-savoury sauce before being carefully frozen to preserve its quality.

The flesh is wonderfully soft and succulent, with a texture unlike any other fish. Rich, buttery and packed with umami, Unagi is one of Japan's most loved seafood delicacies and a favourite topping for sushi and rice bowls.

Unlike many products in our sushi and sashimi range, Unagi is already cooked, making it incredibly easy to enjoy at home. Simply heat gently and serve over rice, slice for sushi or add to a poke bowl for an instant taste of Japan.

Rich, indulgent and utterly delicious, it's a product that often surprises customers trying it for the first time.

One of Japan's most iconic seafood dishes.

Did You Know...
The word 'Kabayaki' refers to the traditional Japanese method of preparing eel.

The fish is filleted, skewered, grilled and repeatedly brushed with a sweet soy-based glaze, creating the distinctive glossy finish and rich flavour for which Unagi is famous.

In Japan, eel has been enjoyed for centuries and is traditionally eaten during the height of summer. It's regarded as a nourishing food and remains one of the most popular dishes served in specialist eel restaurants throughout the country. While sushi may have introduced many people to Unagi, it is just as commonly served simply over a bowl of steamed rice.

Simple ingredients, centuries of tradition and extraordinary flavour.

The hard work has already been done for you.

Simply remove from the packaging and heat gently under the grill, in the oven or in a frying pan until warmed through. The glaze will become beautifully sticky and aromatic as it heats.

Serve sliced over steamed rice, use as a sushi topping or add to a poke bowl alongside avocado, cucumber and pickled ginger.

Many of our customers enjoy it exactly as the Japanese do - simply served over hot rice with a little spring onion and sesame.

Quick, easy and packed with flavour.
