Mackerel are currently proving a little elusive and, because landings and sizes can vary considerably, we're not taking online orders at the moment. If you'd like to order some, please get in touch and we'll let you know what's available.

Few fish capture the taste of summer quite like fresh Mackerel. Rich, oily and packed with flavour, they're at their absolute best when landed locally and enjoyed as fresh as possible.

In recent years, Mackerel have become less predictable around parts of the UK coastline. While overall stock levels remain healthy, the main shoals have gradually shifted further north, resulting in fewer fish being landed into some traditional fishing ports. Scotland has seen increased activity, while significant numbers are now being found in Scandinavian waters.

When available, we source the very best fish we can find. South West line-caught Mackerel are typically smaller and wonderfully delicate in flavour, often arriving what fishmongers call 'stiff-alive' - exceptionally fresh and in prime condition. Scottish fish tend to be larger and richer, with beautifully firm flesh.

They're one of the finest fish on the counter and always worth seeking out when the season gets underway.

Simple, seasonal and utterly delicious.

Did You Know?
Mackerel are one of the fastest swimming fish found around the UK coast and can travel hundreds of miles as they migrate in search of food and the perfect water temperature.

In recent years, several major UK retailers have removed Mackerel from sale due to ongoing disagreements between coastal nations over future catch allocations. This decision relates to fisheries management and quota negotiations rather than concerns about the health of the stock itself. Mackerel remain one of the UK's most iconic seafood species and have been enjoyed by coastal communities for generations.

Sometimes the story behind the fish is just as fascinating as the fish itself.

Fresh Mackerel is one of the simplest and most rewarding fish to cook. Rich in flavour and naturally oily, it doesn't need much more than a hot pan, a barbecue or a grill.

Most customers prefer their Mackerel filleted, and the fillets are fantastic pan-fried skin-side down until crisp. Serve with a squeeze of lemon and a simple salad, or pair with stronger flavours such as mustard, horseradish or gooseberry.

If you fancy a whole Mackerel, try cooking them on the barbecue or under a hot grill. The skin crisps beautifully and the flesh remains wonderfully moist and succulent.

Mackerel also loves Mediterranean flavours such as tomatoes, olives, garlic and fresh herbs, making it perfect for summer lunches and outdoor cooking.

As with all oily fish, the fresher it is, the better it will taste, which is why fishmongers get so excited when the first line-caught fish of the season arrive.

Simple, seasonal and one of the finest fish suppers you'll ever eat.

Depending on the size of the fish landed, either one whole small fish per person, or one larger fish will serve 2
