Don't 'diss' the humble 'Crab Stick'!

Crab sticks are made from surimi, a processed white-fish product with a smooth, slightly elastic texture and a mild, savoury flavour. Often labelled as ‘imitation’ seafood, surimi is actually made using real fish, most commonly wild Alaska pollock.

Widely used around the world, surimi is valued for its consistency, versatility, high protein and low calorie content rather than for being traditional or ‘natural’. Crab sticks are fully cooked and ready to eat, making them a familiar ingredient in seafood salads, sandwiches and sushi (including California Rolls).

If you’re going to have crab sticks, brand really matters. We love Macrae, quite simply, they’re the best around in terms of texture, flavour and reliability.

An interesting fact:
When my dad sold his business in 2000, it was bought by Macrae Foods, one of the few UK manufacturers of seafood (or crab) sticks at the time, alongside supplying major supermarkets. That meant I was sold along with the business and I actually went on to work for Macrae until they were later acquired by Young’s Seafood in 2004.
