The name Banderilla comes from Spain, where these little skewered snacks are a popular part of tapas culture. The word originally referred to the colourful barbed sticks used in bullfighting, with the olives, peppers and anchovies creating the same bright appearance on a much tastier and considerably friendlier skewer.
