Herring are one of our great British traditional fish, yet somehow over the years they’ve slipped a little out of fashion. For centuries these beautiful little silver fish were one of the most important catches around our coastline, supporting entire fishing communities and creating traditions that are still part of our maritime history today.

And we absolutely love them.

Rich, succulent and naturally full of flavour, herring are particularly fabulous marinated. The traditional combination of gently cured fish with sweet, sharp and aromatic flavours cuts beautifully through their natural richness, creating something that is ridiculously moreish and completely ready to eat.

Our Silver Tide Marinated Herrings are produced in Scotland and come in four delicious varieties - traditional Rollmops, Dill, Madeira and Sweet Marinated Herring. Each has its own character, from fresh and herby to sweet, tangy and deeply savoury.

Serve them simply with good bread or crispbread, alongside new potatoes, as part of a cold seafood platter or just do what we do and stand at the fridge eating them straight from the tub. No judgement here.

If you've never tried marinated herring, you really should. And if you already love them, you'll understand exactly why we're so pleased to have these in the shop.

Did you know... the British herring fishery was once enormous. During its heyday, vast shoals were followed around the coast by fleets of fishing boats and the famous herring girls - teams of highly skilled women who travelled from port to port, gutting and packing the catch at extraordinary speed. Herring wasn't simply another fish; for generations it provided livelihoods for whole coastal communities.

Ultra delicious, these Silver Tide Rollmops are definitely one of our favourite things, but we also love the other flavours - Sweet Cure, Madeira and Dill Marinade

Just open and enjoy, fabulous served with rye breads and a light salad
